Furthermore, the country's taxes are already pretty high.

This is a tricky combination since, on current trends, there won't be enough money in the kitty to pay me the benefits that current pensioners get when I retire - there'll be even less when you retire. Furthermore, there's not much room to squeeze money out of more taxes to make up the shortfall.

This isn't just a mad worry of mine, its covered frequently in, for instance, the economist. Unless something is done there will be serious financial problems.

The immigration of young folk is a good way of dealing with this. Where Sweden has failed is not in letting a lot of people in - they're needed - rather in the way the government has handled integration. Here my arguments relevant to the monolingual Brits don't apply....D.https://www.blogger.com/profile/09526821341136575136noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4207083004469792806.post-534768478513092422009-07-21T16:54:24.573+02:002009-07-21T16:54:24.573+02:00I agree that if you look at it as an English expat...I agree that if you look at it as an English expat it is slightly different to other types of immigrantion.
I don't have anything against the English expat, especially the one you describe.
Im just as fond of going to the Irish bars as anyone and most of my friends are English speaking.

My sambos dad is English and has lived here for over 20 years, speaks Swedish fluently but still celebrates traditional English Christmas amongst other things. I think you can get the right balance between the two.

I read you think Sweden needs immigration which I think all countries do but do you think Sweden needs it to the extent it has or over the last 30 years has it been too much?jamie_plymouthnoreply@blogger.com
